The Executive Branch Must Act Within Its Authority

Published in The Galveston Coumty Daily News November 28, 2023 We are seeing an all-out attempt to destroy Donald Trump using the judicial system. This isn’t new. Since the beginning of time those in power have used all the tools at their disposal to keep their power. For example, William Tyndale was burned at the stake for publishing the first Bible in the language of commoners, threatening the elites who wanted to keep control of who could read God’s word. It’s always about a drunken thirst for power; squashing anything that threatens keeping it. We're not condoning here Trump’s trash talk and personal attacks. He needs to control his emotions and his tongue (See James 1:19, 3:5-6). At the same time, I loved his policies/accomplishment while President: A secure border, a thriving economy, near full employment (especially for minorities), no runaway inflation, energy independence, no wars, a peace through strength foreign policy, and support for law enforcement and a non-woke military. But those in power are weaponizing our judicial system, turning a blind eye to their friends while attacking those who threaten their hold on power. Trump faces multiple indictments. In the NY civil case and the Washington election interference case judges are trying to muzzle Trump by instituting gag orders. Both cases raise first amendment issues, balancing the need to ensure a fair trial and Trump’s right to speak freely, especially as part of his presidential campaign. In the Washington case even the ACLU (which is certainly not supporting Trump’s reelection) has criticized the gag order saying Trump “cannot possibly know what he is permitted to say, and what he is not.” In the NY civil trial, the judge demonstrated his bias by saying Trump acted fraudulently, doing so before the trial even began and the NY Democrat Attorney General prosecuting the case ran for office on a platform of getting Trump -- who cares on what charges, she’d just get him. Gag orders that are designed to stop Trump from publicly defending himself in the midst of a campaign highlight the extent to which those who are in power and who are feel threatened will go. Meanwhile, the Justice Department (DOJ) slow-walked the cases involving Joe Biden’s son Hunter allowing the statute of limitations ran out. They also offered a sweetheart plea deal for Hunter, which the judge wouldn’t sign off on. Then DOJ appointed Jack Smith as Special Counsel -- the former Hunter Biden prosecutor -- when their policy has always clearly been to hire an uninvolved outside attorney. Additionally, when it was revealed Joe Biden received a $40,000 check, and perhaps a lot more, in what has been reported to be a money laundering scheme, in return for favors to foreign interests, DOJ refused to appoint a special counsel at all. The politicalization and weaponization of our justice system may help those in power who feel threatened, but I contend doing so is wrong. If our nation is to survive this must stop and stop now. All of us need to stand for truth and equal treatment for all, not graft, favoritism, and corruption. Comments Received on this Column:
